Mammals unique to the country include the Armenian Birch Mouse (EDGE)
known only from a single locality and the Armenian
Bat (IUCN
Red List).
Two freshwater fish species
are found only in Lake Sevan and its tributaries: the Gokcha Barbel (SpringerLink)
and the Sevan Trout (FishBase).
There are 316 species of invertebrates known only from Armenia by one
estimate (Biodiversity
of Armenia).
These include a freshwater limpet Ancylus armenia (fig. 21 at Internet Archive), a running crab spider Philodromus rikhteri (p. 8 of Caucasian Spiders pdf file), a jumping spider Pseudicius pseudocourtauldi (Salticidae of the World), a longhorned beetle Dorcadion sevliczi (SZMN), a click beetle Ampedus armeniacus (Elateridae),
a chalcidoid wasp Eurytoma armenica
(NHM-London), and the leaf beetles Crytocephalus
richteri (Chrysomelidae
of Europe) and Phyllotreta
maculosa (Chrysomelidae
of Europe).
Armenia forms part of two biodiversity hotspots: the Caucasus
(Biodiversity
Hotspots) and the Irano-Anatolian (Biodiversity
Hotspots). Lake Sevan is noteworthy for endemic
freshwater species (UNEP/GRID)
and is part of the Kura-South Caspian Drainages freshwater ecoregion (FEOW).
