Benin
Vertebrates unique to
Benin include the recently described geckos Hemidactylus
beninensis (p. 11 of Bio-Nica pdf
file) and Hemidactylus lamaensis (p. 9 of ZFMK pdf file), a darter Nannocharax signifer (NHM-London), and a miniature barb Barboides britzi (p. 12 of IUCN pdf file).
Endemic
invertebrates include a scorpion Akentrobuthus atakora (AMNH pdf file), a ground spider Ladissa semirufa (Internet Archive), a fly Drosophila dossoui (DGRC pdf file), a jewel beetle Brachelytrium beninense (Zootaxa pdf file), a leaf beetle Oides castanea (SysTax), and a hister beetle Saprinus goergeni (Yves Gomy).
Plants known only from Benin include Thunbergia atacorensis (West African Plants),
Kyllinga
beninensis (Botanicus), Fadogia rostrata (JSTOR), Aframomum sceleratum (JSTOR), and Ipomoea
beninensis (JSTOR). Hibiscus
lonchosepalus (JSTOR)
is known only from the type specimen collected in 1910 near Agouagon.
Parts of Benin belong to the Guinean Forests of West Africa hotspot (Biodiversity
Hotspots). The Atacora Mountains in the far north
within the West Sudanian Savanna ecoregion (EoE)
are important for endemic plants.
