Dominica
Birds found exclusively on Dominica include the national bird, the Imperial Amazon (ARKive), and the Red-necked Amazon (ARKive).
Endemic reptiles include the Dominican Anole Anolis oculatus (CalPhotos) and the Dominican Ground Lizard Ameiva fuscata (Wikipedia). The Dominica Racer Alsophis sibonius (BioLib) has recently been elevated to a full species (Zootaxa pdf file). The Dominica Boa Boa nebulosa (caribherp) and the Dominica Blindsnake Typhlops dominicanus (p. 14 of IRCF 3 MB pdf file) are both sometimes considered full species unique to Dominica.
The Dominican Whistling Frog Eleutherodactylus amplinympha
(ARKive)
is also unique to the island.
Butterfly species restricted to Dominica include the
Dominican Snout Libytheana
fulvescens (Butterflies of America) and and two hairstreaks Electrostrymon dominicana (Butterflies of America) and Chlorostrymon clenchi (Butterflies of America). There are 62 endemic beetle species (Univ. Nebraska pdf file) including a tortoise beetle Cephaloleia
simplex (Bio-Nica
pdf file), a weevil Peridinetus lateropicta (p. 3 of Zootaxa pdf file), and the longhorned beetles Neseuterpia
deknuydti (Lamiaires
du Monde) and Anisopodus dominicensis
(Smithsonian). Other endemic insects include a stick insect Sermyle kirbyi (Phasmida), a grasshopper Nesophyllidium
fulvicosta (Mel J. Rivera), a katydid Acantheremus dominicanus
(OSF), a leafroller moth Auratonota dominica
(Tortricid.net),
an ant Solenopsis enigmatica (FCLA pdf file),
a sweat bee Habralictus gonzalezi (ZooKeys), and a firefly Photinus
lutzi (AMNH).
Additional invertebrates found nowhere else are a jumping
spider Sidusa dominicana
(Salticidae
of the World), a goblin spider Heteroonops macaque (AMNH), a centipede Piestophilus
tenuitarsis (CHILOBASE), and several land snails: Drymaeus laticintus (Wikipedia), Amphibulima pardalina (Wikipedia), Laevaricella perlucens (Wikipedia), and Amphicyclotulus dominicensis and Helicina rhodostoma (both on p. 14 of Zool. Med. Leiden pdf file).
Among Dominica's endemic vascular plants (p. 10 of CBD
pdf file) is the national flower, the Bois Kwaib or Carib Wood Sabinea carinalis (Dominica
Botanic Gardens). Other plants found only on
Dominica include Charianthus
dominicencis (Melastomataceae of the World),
Inga dominicensis (JSTOR), Besleria petiolaris
(Plants
of the Eastern Caribbean), Gonolobus waitukubuliensis (Google Books), Miconia ernstii (BGBM),
and Pitcairnia
micotrinensis (BGBM). Chapsa rubropulveracea (eol) and Parmelia cryptochlora
(p. 12 of Smithsonian
pdf file) are endemic lichens and Phycolepidozia
exigua (JSTOR) is the sole species in an endemic liverwort family,
the Phycolepidoziaceae, that unfortunately may be extinct (IUCN
Red List).
