Navassa Island
Reptiles unique to
Navassa include the Navassa Anole Anolis longiceps,
the Navassa Galliwasp Celestus
badius, Cochran’s Croaking Gecko Aristelliger cochranae,
the Navassa Dwarf Gecko Sphaerodactylus
becki, and the extinct Navassa Curly-tailed Lizard Leiocephalus eremitus
(all at Robert
Powell and Caribherp). Two other extinct endemic reptiles are
also sometimes considered full species: the Navassa Iguana Cyclura onchiopsis
and the Navassa Dwarf Boa Tropidophis
bucculentus (both at Robert
Powell).
Marine fish known solely from Navassa include a goby Evermannichthys bicolor
(gobiidae.com),
a sand stargazer Gillellus
inescatus (p. 2 of Smithsonian pdf file),
the Whitesaddle Blenny Starksia
leucovitta (aqua),
and another blenny Acanthemblemaria
harpeza (p. 3 of Smithsonian pdf file).
Invertebrates exclusive to Navassa include a longhorned beetle Plectromerus navassae
(Smithsonian), a may beetle Phyllophaga navassa (Univ. Nebraska pdf file),
a wall crab spider Selenops
trifidus (pp. 25 & 52 of Bio-Nica pdf file), a shorttailed whipscorpion Rowlandius steineri
(SEA
pdf file), a millipede Macroxenodes navassaensis (p. 11 of MNHN pdf file), a tanaid crustacean Saltipedis
navassensis (NHM-LA pdf file),and an isopod crustacean Stenetrium kensleyi (NHM-LA pdf file).
Vascular plant species restricted to Navassa include a sedge Cyperus
subcaracasanus (BGBM),
a clearweed Pilea perfragilis (La
Jornada), and a sandmat Chamaesyce hepatica (NYBG).
