Saba
A lizard
unique to Saba is the Saba Anole Anolis
sabanus (Alsophis)(Saumfinger).
Some yet undescribed
marine
gobies were discovered off Saba
in 2006 (BBC) and a new blenny Starksia williamsi (eol) was described in 2011. Other undescribed species from the Saba Bank include a cardinalfish Apogon (fig. 70 at PLoS One) and a tube blenny Emblemariopsis (fig. 158 at PLoS One),
Invertebrates restricted to Saba include an ambush bug Lophoscutus geijskesi
(p. 8 of Naturalis
pdf file), a moth fly Alepia apexalba (Taylor & Francis), and the goblin spiders Scaphiella saba (AMNH) and Stenoonops saba (AMNH). Two likely undescribed species of otocorals were discovered on a recent survey of the Saba Bank (PLoS One).
About a dozen new species of brown algae (PLos One) have been recently discovered on the Saba Bank.
The Saba Bank is the largest atoll in the Atlantic Ocean and has several marine species not known elsewhere (see PLoS One). Saba
is
included in the
Caribbean Islands biodiversity hotspot (CI) and is a special municipality of the Netherlands.
